Building defects still continue to plague the construction
industry. The lessons learned over the last forty years have not
been fully applied. Many new or refurbished buildings still leak or
crack. Lack of awareness by designers and installers as to the main
mechanisms that trigger such failures remains a problem for the
industry. Investigating and rectifying building failures form a
major part of building surveyors' bread and butter work. This book
provides guidance on this work for typical residential, commercial
and industrial buildings - with advice on how to diagnose a wide
range of defects with an emphasis on evidence based practice
throughout. It considers both modern and older construction
methods, together with new and traditional materials. The
particular problems of alteration and renovation work are also
discussed. The first four chapters provide information and guidance
on the methodology for investigating failures - how to prepare for
and conduct an investigation into a building defect and
subsequently diagnose its cause in a logical manner. This fourth
edition has been updated and expanded to cover the latest
diagnostic procedures and research. It also includes Appendices and
a new Bibliography, and provides an extensive list of books on
building pathology and related topics in the UK and North America.
It is essential reading for all students and practitioners
interested in building surveying and building conservation.
Originally published in 1971, this volume contains papers invited
for a conference on economic research relevant to national urban
development held in September of the same year. The conference
pulled together researchers from both the United Kingdom and the
United States who were interested in economic research on key
issues of both countries' management of their urban areas. Papers
are varied from those in the early stages of research to those
whose research has been completed and all provide an insight into
the increase of urbanisation present in the first world. This title
will be of interest to students of environmental studies and
economics.

As existing buildings age, nearly half of all construction activity
in Britain is related to maintenance, refurbishment and
conversions. Building adaptation is an activity that continues to
make a significant contribution to the workload of the construction
industry. Given its importance to sustainable construction, the
proportion of adaptation works in relation to new build is likely
to remain substantial for the foreseeable future, especially in the
developed parts of the world. Building Adaptation, Second Edition
is intended as a primer on the physical changes that can affect
older properties. It demonstrates the general principles,
techniques, and processes needed when existing buildings must
undergo alteration, conversion, extension, improvement, or
refurbishment. The publication of the first edition of Building
Adaptation reflected the upsurge in refurbishment work. The book
quickly established itself as one of the core texts for building
surveying students and others on undergraduate and postgraduate
built environment courses. This new edition continues to provide a
comprehensive introduction to all the key issues relating to the
adaptation of buildings. It deals with any work to a building over
and above maintenance to change its capacity, function or
performance.
This book provides guidance on building survey work for typical
residential, commercial and industrial buildings, with advice on
how to diagnose a wide range of defects. It considers both modern
and older construction methods, together with new and traditional
materials. The particular problems of alteration and renovation
work are discussed, with guidance on how to carry out measured
surveys.
A separate chapter covers survey problems after flood and fire
damage, and the legal section takes account of recent developments
in case law relating to inspections and surveys of properties.
This new edition continues to provide a thorough treatment of
all the key issues relating to surveying buildings, dealing with
the problems that surveyors are likely to encounter when inspecting
buildings.
Changes for the new edition include: Examples and references
have been updated Evaluation of condition rating systems for
domestic and commercial buildings A new section on the home
condition reports More information on slate defects Bibliography
revised and expanded, to make it more comprehensive Additional
appendix showing the home condition report format
This thoughtful, and often amusing, memoir traces the life of James
Douglas-Hamilton, which has seen him serve in three different
chambers. Following 23 Years as a Conservative MP at Westminster,
he became a member of the new Scottish Parliament and now sits in
the House of Lords. Through his eyes we gain a fascinating insight
into historic events - from his early memories as a pageboy at the
Queen's coronation to his time as a Minister for Margaret
Thatcher's Government. Previously unpublished correspondences
between the author and the Iron Lady shed new light on the
controversial decision to introduce the community charge, or poll
tax, in Scotland. This memoir also includes new material from
recently declassified MI5 papers documenting the mysterious flight
to Britain made by Rudolf Hess, the Nazi Deputy Leader, during the
Second World War to see the author's father. Douglas-Hamilton's
research into this extraordinary episode, and the evidence he has
uncovered definitively lay the conspiracy theories to rest. James
Douglas-Hamilton has peopled the pages of this book with the
colourful characters he encountered during his long years of public
service, including Harold Macmillan, Helen Suzman, Jomo Kenyatta
and, of course, the indomitable Margaret Thatcher.

Refurbishment and repair accounts for approximately 50 per cent of
annual construction turnover. It is therefore essential that
practitioners and those students who aspire to work in this sector
are equipped with the best tools to do the job. This book has been
produced to fill that gap in construction literature. The nature of
refurbishment and repair is markedly different from new-build work
since it is necessary to work within the restraints of a
pre-determind situation. Those who do so are faced with an existing
building or structure that may be many years old. It may have been
built to standards hardly recognisable when compared to those of
today. It is therefore necessary to build safely and to match as
closely as possible comtemporary standards on sustainability and
energy conservation. It is also apparent that existing buildings
may not conform to 21st century standards of structural analysis or
stability - and yet have stood without distress for many years.
Guidence is provided to deal with such situations together with
ideas on how to assess the residual life of a refurbished or
repaired building.First and foremost it is essential for those
involved in this type of work to gain an intimate knowledge of the
structure under consideration. This book suggests ways of seeking
this knowledge. Failure to investigate the history of existing
develpoments may add considerably to the cost of construction and,
in the extreme, to structural collapse involving injury or loss of
life. This book proceeds logically through the reasons to consider
refurbishment and repair and offers advice on risks, discovery,
contracts, materials, learning from the past and legal restraints.
Best practice is illustrated by a series of case studies. Extensive
bibliographies have been provided to assist those with the need for
further research. "Refurbishment and Repair in Construction"
provides a companion volume to "Site Engineers Manual" which will
be available as a second edition.

The last decade has brought dramatic changes in the way that
researchers analyze economic and financial time series. This book
synthesizes these recent advances and makes them accessible to
first-year graduate students. James Hamilton provides the first
adequate text-book treatments of important innovations such as
vector autoregressions, generalized method of moments, the economic
and statistical consequences of unit roots, time-varying variances,
and nonlinear time series models. In addition, he presents basic
tools for analyzing dynamic systems (including linear
representations, autocovariance generating functions, spectral
analysis, and the Kalman filter) in a way that integrates economic
theory with the practical difficulties of analyzing and
interpreting real-world data. "Time Series Analysis" fills an
important need for a textbook that integrates economic theory,
econometrics, and new results.
The book is intended to provide students and researchers with a
self-contained survey of time series analysis. It starts from first
principles and should be readily accessible to any beginning
graduate student, while it is also intended to serve as a reference
book for researchers.
